How to Make Pour Over Coffee: A Simple Guide for Creatives

At Brain Juice Coffee, we believe coffee is more than a beverage—it’s a ritual. A portal to creative flow. And the best way to unlock that ritual? The pour over method.

This guide will walk you through how to make pour over coffee the Brain Juice way (step-by-step) so you can brew a clean, flavorful cup that supports your creativity, not distracts from it.

Whether you’re new to pour overs or looking to dial in your morning ritual, you’re in the right place.

Why We Recommend Pour Over Coffee

When we created Brain Juice Coffee, we wanted to build more than just flavor—we wanted to craft momentum. The pour over method mirrors that mission. It’s intentional, calming, and surprisingly easy to master.

Here’s why pour over coffee works beautifully with our air-roasted, single-origin beans like Cosmic Flow:

Flavor Clarity

Pour over allows the natural notes—caramel, cherry, floral—to shine without bitterness or burn.

Clean Energy

Unlike harsh brews, pour over gives you smooth, sustained focus with no jitters or crash.

A Ritual That Grounds You

This method encourages you to slow down, connect to the moment, and prepare your mind for deep creative work.

What You Need to Make Pour Over Coffee

Essential Pour Over Equipment:

  • Pour over dripper (we love the Hario V60 or Kalita Wave)

  • Coffee filter

  • Fresh Brain Juice Coffee (medium grind)

  • Gooseneck kettle (for pouring control)

  • Hot water (195–205°F)

  • Mug

  • Scale

Recommended Brew Ratio:

1:16 (1 gram coffee to 16 grams water)

Example: 25g coffee + 400g water = 2 full cups

Step-by-Step: How to Brew the Perfect Pour Over

1. Heat Your Water

Bring water to around 200°F. If you don’t have a thermometer, boil it, then let it rest for 30 seconds.

2. Prep Your Filter

Place your filter in the dripper and rinse it with hot water. This removes paper taste and preheats your equipment.

3. Add Coffee Grounds

Use 25g of medium-ground Brain Juice Coffee (grind should resemble sea salt). Place in filter and level the bed.

4. Let It Bloom

Start your timer. Gently pour 50g of water to wet all the grounds. Let sit for 30–45 seconds. This allows gases to escape and preps the coffee for extraction.

5. Pour Slow & Steady

Pour remaining water in circles, slowly and evenly, until you reach 400g total over 2:30 to 3:30 minutes. Keep your pour controlled and meditative.

6. Let It Drip and Swirl

Once it finishes dripping, remove the dripper, give your mug a gentle swirl, and inhale deeply. The aroma is your creative cue.

Troubleshooting Your Pour Over

  • Brew too bitter? Your grind may be too fine or brew time too long.

  • Brew too weak? Grind may be too coarse or brew time too short.

  • Tastes flat? Try filtered water or adjusting your coffee-to-water ratio.
